Hmm, so here’s the thing.

I decided to check out the nineties BBC series The House of Elliot just for giggles, since it looked interesting and happens to be posted conveniently on youtube.

So I watched the whole first episode, albeit kind of half-heartedly since I was dealing with several distractions at the time, but I kept thinking to myself that it was a really bizarre first episode.  If you wanna go for an in medias res kind of beginning I’m all for that, but you gotta make it exciting to hook in the viewer.  What I was watching was nowhere near gripping enough to warrant such a lack of setup or explanation.

It wasn’t until I finished the nearly hour-long episode that I realized my mistake.  Instead of clicking on “season 1 episode 1”  I’d accidentally clicked on “season 1 episode 11” and watched the whole thing.  Which explains a lot.

But now I have no interest in starting at the actual beginning.  The story and characters seem interesting enough, at least on paper, but the execution was so bland and dry it just left me feeling underwhelmed.  Perhaps it’s unfair to judge a show based on that kind of first viewing, but I don’t think I’ll be watching anymore anytime soon.
