Day 11: Movie with the most beautiful scenery

Bambi (1942) and The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

This is the first real tie on my list, but it won’t be the last. Lotr was an obvious choice for this slot, seeing as the film trilogy is singlehandedly responsible for boosting New Zealand’s international tourism by half. But I just couldn’t resist putting Bambi on here as well.

Is it cheating to cite an animated film as having the “best scenery” when really it’s all just watercolors? Well, by that argument you’d have to take into consideration all the CGI that went into Lotr, which is just a high tech version of watercolors, right? In any case, Bambi is such a visual feast of a film, and I really wish more people would remember it for it’s aesthetic value and not just it’s cutesy animals. Whereas Lotr was all about grand, epic vistas and sweeping helicopter shots, the scenery of Bambi had a much more intimate feel, but was still very rich. You really feel like you’re in nature when you’re watching it, which makes the offscreen threat of Man’s encroaching presence all the more eerie and frightening.
