Day 10: A movie you like with an actor/actress you hate

Matchstick Men (2003)

I chose this one not so much because of how much I like the film itself, but rather how intensely I despise Nicholas Cage in general.  I am severely allergic to NC.  If any trailer or tv spot for one of his movies plays within my sightline or hearing range I start to break out in hives.  Ok, not really, but I seriously dislike this actor.  I’m not sure exactly what it is about him that I find such a turn-off, whether his voice, his face, his acting, or as is most likely, his general demeaner, but let’s just classify my reaction to him as strongly negative.

So as you could probably guess from the above rant, I didn’t exactly watch Matchstick Men by choice.  I was stuck on a thirteen hour plane ride and it was the third film they showed, and so I ended up watching it out of sheer boredom.  And something really strange happened… not only did I like it, I got really into it.  I was really invested in the characters and the story and seeing how the drama and humor played out.  Nicholas Cage is definitely not an actor that usually disappears into his roles - you never forget that it’s him playing a part - but in this film I actually thought he did a good job at just that.

I will never be a fan of this actor, but this is a very worthwhile film.
