What’s Up, episode 13
I think I’ve realized why this show’s become such a frustrating viewing experience after such a promising start. It’s not just that the pace is too slow. It’s that the meandering, slice-of-life style pacing conflicts with the melodramatic, high stakes plot points. If you’re going to write a “school life” kind of story with a sprawling ensemble cast of quirky characters living out their personal trials and triumphs, that’s fine. But if you want to start mixing in the makjang elements you need to pick up the pace, because the only way that melo stuff works on any level is if the plot zips along fast enough to keep us hooked. I think this is a case of a show trying to do and be too many things, and suffering from over-ambition.
