Day 05: A movie sequel you’d like to see made someday
Peking Opera Blues (1986)
Dude, why are so many eighties films showing up on this list? Oh well. I picked this one because I know it’s an unrealistic, never-gonna-happen kind of wish, and I almost wouldn’t even want it to because POB is so perfect as is, but at the same this movie definitely leaves you wanting MORE of it.
I don’t think I’m giving too much away when I say that the final scene of the film shows the five heroes (in true Tsui Hark fashion they’re a motley crew of reluctant heroes who’ve been thrown together by absurd circumstances and caught in the crossfire of a crazy conflict) parting ways, each to pursue their own various purposes. As they turn their horses in opposite directions and begin to ride off, the movie freeze frames and the credits roll, and you just know there are more wacky and stirring adventures in store. You just get the feeling that these five people, brought together seemingly by strange fate, are bound to cross paths again.
Basically, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters, and it saddened me to realize, when the movie ended, that POB wasn’t one of the many Hong Kong films to spawn a thousand sequels.
Day 04: A movie you’re embarrassed to admit you like: Underworld (2003)
Day 03: A movie you wish more people had seen: The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)
Day 02: A movie you can recite word for word: Victor Victoria (1982)
Day 01: The first movie you remember seeing: Aladdin (1992)
